Reopening Information
Portland, ME - June 17, 2020

According to the Maine CDC reopening guidelines, the Portland Boxing Club is categorized as Stage 2: Fitness and Exercise Gyms. We will reopen on Monday, June 22, 2020.

The Portland Boxing Club is following USA Boxing’s three tiers of returning to competition:
  • Tier 1: Return to the Gym
    • Phase 1: Limited Participation
    • Phase 2: Moderate Participation
    • Phase 3: Full Participation
  • Tier 2: Return to Single Day Events (Club Shows)
  • Tier 3: Return to Multi-Day Events (Tournaments)

Upon reopening, we will be in Tier 1: Return to the Gym/Phase 1: Limited Participation. During this phase, no physical contact, practice with mitts or sparring will occur. Because shared water bottles will not be allowed, Portland Boxing Club will now offer bottled water available for purchase.

Our priority has always been the safety of our members and this is no different. USA Boxing-approved signage has been posted throughout the gym. To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Portland Boxing Club has implemented the following new rules based on guidance from USA Boxing and the Maine CDC.
  • Do not enter the gym if you are not feeling well.
  • Twenty people maximum in the gym, including members, coaches and staff.
  • Members must sign-in each day they come to the gym.
  • Staff, visitors and those not actively in a workout should wear a face mask that covers both your nose and mouth.
  • Social distancing and stay 6 feet away from each other.
  • If possible, keep entrance door open during operating hours.
  • No changing room access (come prepared). Wear your gym clothes to the gym.
  • Members must bring their own water bottles and equipment including hand wraps, gloves, jump rope.
  • No public use head gear, gloves or wraps will be provided.
  • No sharing of head gear, gloves or wraps between members.
  • Hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies are available at every station/area.
  • Use hand sanitizer often, including every time you take off your gloves.
  • Follow the cleaning instructions before you leave a station and when you get to a new station.
Virtual Drop-In Class
Portland, ME - May 9, 2020

“Virtual” drop-in classes were hosted by three time national Golden  Gloves champion Liz Leddy during the gym closure. In these classes,  Leddy covered boxing basics that viewers could work on from home until the gym  was able to reopen. Closed Due to Corona Virus
Portland Maine - March 16, 2020

To help with social distancing, Portland Boxing Club is closed to non-boxing team members starting today, Monday March 16. Members of the boxing team (those with a team uniform) may continue training at the Portland Boxing Club during this time. We encourage team members to train at the times most convenient to them to minimize the number of people in the gym at any one time. Please wipe down equipment and spray gloves at the end of your training. 

 The Getaway Raffle drawing will still be held tomorrow, March 17 at 6:00 pm; however, this will be live on Facebook and not open to the public as was previously scheduled.  Raffle tickets can still be purchased on-line at www.portlandboxingclub.org/raffle.  The drop-in class for this Saturday, March 21 is also canceled. We will monitor the situation daily and reopen as soon as possible.

Portland Boxing Club Boxers Win Three Championships at New England Golden Gloves
Lowell, MA – March 5, 2020

Portland Boxing Club’s athletes representing Northern New England at the New England Golden Gloves at the historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, MA. 

PBC’s Jordan Lindsay, a novice class super heavyweight (201+ lbs) of Windham, lost a competitive, close bout to the elusive Quintin Sumpter, of Pittsfield, MA, who was representing Western New England in Novice Semi-Finals. Lindsay also had a special non-tournament bout later in the tournament where he won a unanimous decision over Jerry Polanco, of Brooklyn, CT. 

PBC’s Wade Faria, a novice class middleweight (165 lbs) of South Portland, won a unanimous decision over Manuel Teo, of Marlboro, MA, who was representing Central New England in the Novice Finals. Faria dominated the bout from start to finish with good boxing technique from the outside and outworking Teo on the inside. 

PBC’s Kate Zehr, an open class featherweight (125 lbs) of South Portland, won a unanimous decision over Noelle Boran, of East Walpole, MA, who was representing Central New England in the Open Finals. Zehr out-hustled Boran in every round with a non-stop attack. 

Reining open class lightweight (132 lbs) New England champion Liz Leddy, of Portland, won a split decision over Marni O’Shea, of Danbury, CT, who was representing Western New England in the Open Finals. O’Shea tried to outbox Leddy, but the pressure was too much and Leddy won the close decision. This is Leddy’s tenth New England Golden Gloves Championship win and she will be competing for her fourth National Golden Gloves Championship win. 

With these championship wins, Portland Boxing Club athletes have now earned 217 championship wins in the organization’s 28 years.

The open class New England champions will advance to the National Golden Gloves Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma which has been rescheduled to start on August 10, 2020.

Jordan Lindsay Scores Second RSC in One Week
Lowell, MA - January 30, 2020

PBC’s Jordan Lindsay, a novice class super heavyweight (201+ lbs) of Windham, made short work of Joseph Peters, of Merrimack, NH, in a special non-tournament bout at the Central New England Golden Gloves in Lowell, MA on January 30, 2020. Lindsay outgunned the opponent in trouble immediately scoring a standing 8 count within the first 20 seconds. Peters was given a second standing 8 count before the referee mercilessly stopped the fight at 1:58 in the first round.

Northern New England Golden Gloves
Somersworth, NH – January 25, 2020

Two Portland Boxing Club athletes competed in the Northern New England Golden Gloves Championships finals in Somersworth, NH. 

PBC’s Wade Faria, a novice class middleweight (165 lbs) of South Portland, won a very competitive bout by unanimous decision over southpaw Travis Campbell, of Manchester, NH. Faria scored a standing 8-count in the third round to get the win on all the judges’ scorecards. 

PBC’s Jordan Lindsay, a novice class super heavyweight (201+ lbs) of Windham, won RSC (technical knock-out) over James Ploof, of Cornwall, VT. Ploof received a standing 8-count in the first round and two standing 8-counts in the second round before the referee had seen enough and stopped the bout at 58 seconds into the second round.

With these Northern New England Golden Gloves Championships wins, Portland Boxing Club athletes have now earned 214 championship wins in the organization’s 28 years.

The winners of the Northern New England championships advance to the All-New England Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, MA. Portland Boxing Club athletes advancing by walk over are former two time novice class featherweight (125 lbs) champion Kate Zehr, of South Portland, who is now competing in the open class, and defending open class lightweight (132 lbs) New England champion Liz Leddy of Portland. 

Novice class champions compete in the New England novice class Tournament of Champions semi-finals on Thursday, February 13 with the winners advancing to the finals on Thursday, February 20. Open class champions will compete in the New England open class Tournament of Champions semi-finals on Thursday, February 27 with the winners advancing to the finals on Thursday March 5. The open class New England champions will advance to the National Golden Gloves Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma beginning on May 4, 2020.
