Maine Boxing Hall of Fame

The Portland Boxing Club (PBC) has established the Maine Boxing Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame seeks to recognize and honor boxers and supporters for their achievements or contributions to the Portland Boxing Club program.

Nomination process
Maine Boxing Hall of Fame has the following criteria to ensure that those we honor have achieved greatness while exemplifying the best in people and inspiring those around them. 

A nomination form will be available on the website at www.portlandboxingclub.org/hof and nominations must be received by TBD for consideration in that year’s Hall of Fame nominees. 
  • Selection committee members can also nominate individuals. 
  • Members of the selection committee are not eligible for the Hall of Fame. 
  • The selection committee will review all nominees for either approval or disapproval based on the award criteria below prior to voting on inductees. 
  • Nominees must exemplify high standards of ethics, sportsmanship, and moral character. 
Once nominated, a nominee will remain active for three (3) years. After three years, those not selected for induction will be placed on an inactive nominee list and eligible for re-nomination. 

Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award is for supporters of the Portland Boxing Club. 
  • A supporter has helped develop and foster growth of the Portland Boxing Club boxing community and provided significant support over many years. 
  • Supporters may include, but are not limited to, coaches, officials, volunteers, financial contributors. 
  • While many Portland Boxing Club supporters have served other programs over the years, Hall of Fame membership will only be judged on their service to the Portland Boxing Club and not their contributions to other programs. 
  • A supporters may be eligible for nomination three (3) years after their most recent involvement with the Portland Boxing Club. This requirement can be waived in the event of age or illness of the nominee. 
Up to one (1) supporter may be selected for induction each year. There is no minimum number of supporters required to be selected. 

Boxer Award
The Boxer Award is for an athlete who was on the Portland Boxing Club team. 
  • The boxer must have had a minimum of ten (10) amateur bouts representing the Portland Boxing Club. 
  • Participation in at least one national tournament as an amateur Portland Boxing Club team member is required. 
  • A boxer may be eligible for nomination into the Portland Boxing Club Hall of Fame five (5) years following their most recent bout (either professional or amateur.) This requirement cannot be waived. 
Up to one (1) boxer may be selected for induction each year. There is no minimum number of boxers required to be selected. 

Expo Award
The Expo Award is for a professional boxer from Maine prior to the establishment of the Portland Boxing Club. 
  • The boxer must have had a minimum of three (3) professional bouts at the Portland Expo. 
  • The boxer must have been an active professional prior to 1992. 
  • The boxer must be a past or current resident of Maine. 
  • This award may be granted posthumously. 
Up to two (2) Expo awards may be selected for induction each year. There is no minimum number of Expo awards required to be selected. 

Contributor Award
The Contributor Award is for someone who contributed to the past or present development of the sport of boxing in Maine. 
  • Contributors may include, but are not limited to, promoters, managers, agents, sports writers, and sports casters. 
  • The contributor must be a past or current resident of Maine. 
  • This award may be granted posthumously. 
Up to one (1) contributor may be selected for induction each year. There is no minimum number of contributors required to be selected. 

Selection committee
The Selection Committee for the Distinguished Service Award will be chaired by Bobby Russo and include members of the Portland Boxing Club Board of Directors. 

The Selection Committee for the Boxer Award, Expo Award and Contributor Award will be chaired by Bobby Russo and include five (5) members/retired members of Portland area media familiar with Maine boxing history. 

Selection of inductees will be completed by TBD for that year’s Hall of Fame ceremony.   

Fundraising award ceremony
The inductees will be honored at a Fundraising Award Ceremony held in TBD.
  • The Distinguished Service Award inductee and one (1) guest may attend free of charge. 
  • The Boxer Award inductee and three (3) selected family members may attend free of charge. 
  • The Expo Award inductee, if living, and one (1) guest may attend free of charge. 
  • The Contributor Award inductee, if living, and one (1) guest may attend free of charge. 
Additional guests and the general public are invited to purchase tickets to the Fundraising Award Ceremony.
