Skowhegan, ME - December 2, 2018

Portland Boxing Club’s Kate Zehr and pro middleweight Russell "The Haitian Sensation" Lamour, Jr. both scored victories at the Skowhegan Pro-Am show promoted by Team Berry Boxing at the Skowhegan Community Center on December 1.

PBC’s Kate Zehr, of South Portland, a novice class featherweight (125 lbs), kept her winning streak alive, winning her eighth fight in a row. Zehr won a hard-fought battle by a close split decision over Willow Crawford, of Goffstown, NH. 

In the six-round co-main event of the evening, PBC’s Russell Lamour, of Portland, a professional middleweight (160 lbs), won by technical knock-out in the fourth round over the veteran Larry Smith, of Dallas, TX. Lamour looked impressive in his comeback showing sharp boxing skills. After a tentative first round, Lamour scored three knock downs that included a brutal body attack.
Injuries Postpone Annual All Star Boxing Event
Portland, ME - September 6, 2018

Due to injuries to two of our pro boxers, the annual All Star Boxing event at the Portland Expo scheduled for November 10 has been postponed. Undefeated pro middleweight Jason “The Fighting Fireman” Quirk suffered a work-related back injury and is out of work for 8 weeks.  Super welterweight Casey “The Buzzsaw” Kramlich was in a serious work accident where he suffered a crushed femur and has had 2 surgeries to date and will need a bone graft. Also, to further complicate matters, there is a world championship fight card at the Boston Garden Card on October 20 that other New England regional favorites are scheduled to appear; these boxers who would otherwise would have participated at our Expo event in November. On a positive note, Russell “The Haitian Sensation” Lamour is back after an injury suffered in this last fight and will box sometime this fall, possibly at the Boston Garden on October 20.
Second Annual Networking and Boxing Fundraising Event
Following the success of last year's event, Macpage/Wipfli will again be sponsoring a Networking and Boxing Fundraising Event at the Portland Boxing Club on Thursday, September 27. Tickets are $100 each or six tickets for $500. Hors d’oeuvres and drink vouchers are included with your ticket. Networking starts at 5:30 pm and boxing starts at 6:30 pm. This event is limited to 150 people to allow for effective business networking and giving all attendees the opportunity to be ringside. Annual Summer Boot Camp
Portland Boxing Club's annual Summer Boot Camp will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:00 pm and Saturday mornings at 9:00 am starting Thursday August 2 through Thursday August 30, 2018. The cost is $100 for 13 sessions. This boot camp is designed for people interested in becoming a member of the Portland Boxing Club or for anyone who just wants to get in shape.

To sign up for the Summer Boot Camp, email pbcboxing@maine.rr.com. Completing the boot camp will allow you to become a member of the Portland Boxing Club. The $75 membership initiation fee is waived for Summer Boot Camp participants who join Portland Boxing Club in September. Castro Runner Up at Battle in Big D Tournament

Portland Boxing Club’s nationally ranked welterweight Josniel Castro, of Westbrook, lost a split decision to local favorite Quran Barton of Fort Worth, TX in the Elite Male 165-pound division in the final round of the 5th Annual Battle in Big D tournament in Dallas, TX in a hard-fought contest that could have gone either way. In the semifinal round, Castro won a split decision over Jeremiah Morris, of Grand Prairie, TX. Castro was the better and faster boxer, controlling the action for the entire fight.

PBC Boxers Split at Fight for Youth II

Portland, ME – June 25, 2018


Portland Boxing Club’s amateur boxers Liz Leddy and Tito Morales competed Saturday at Haverhill Downtown Boxing’s Fight for Youth II at Haverhill High School in Haverhill, MA.


Leddy, an open class lightweight (132 lbs), lost by 3-2 split decision to Kimberly Wabik of Medford, MA. Leddy won the first round, then Wabik came back in the second to make it a close round that could have gone either way. Wabik picked up the pace in the third to pull out a close decision.


Morales, an open class lightweight (132 lbs), won a close 3-2 split decision over Miles Bloodworth of Woonsooket, RI. Morales appeared to be the better boxer, but Bloodworth stayed busy and had a strong third round to make the fight close.

Two PBC Boxers Represent New England at National Golden Gloves
Omaha, NE – May 21, 2018

Portland Boxing Club’s Liz Leddy and Josniel Castro were on the New England Team last week in the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions at the Ralston Arena in Omaha, NE. The 2018 Tournament of Champions was the first in which the national men’s and women’s events were held together.

Josniel Castro, an open class welterweight (152 lbs), of Westbrook, got a bye in the first round of the tournament. In the second round of the tournament, Castro lost a close, but unanimous, decision to a Kelvin Davis from Washington, DC. Castro had difficulty mounting an offense against the tall, lanky left-hander during the two-minute rounds.

In the first round of the tournament, Liz Leddy, an open class lightweight (132 lbs), of Portland, defeated local favorite Katie New Holy from Omaha by RSC (referee stopped competition) 1:45 into the first round of the bout. Leddy overwhelmed New Holy with her aggressive, non-stop forward action. In the second round of the tournament, Leddy lost a close 3-2 split decision to Rebecca Maine from Punxsutawney, PA.

The New England Team finished the tournament fourth overall out of thirty teams in the Tournament of Champions.

PBC Sweeps at Skowhegan Pro-Am
Portland, ME – April 30, 2018

Portland Boxing Club’s boxers continued on a great run over the past eight days competing in three states winning ten of eleven bouts. The only loss was by split decision. In the most recent event on Saturday, April 28, Portland Boxing Club boxers won four bouts at the Skowhegan Pro-Am show promoted by Team Berry Boxing at the Skowhegan Area High School. 

PBC’s Anthony Riga, of South Portland, a light welterweight (141 lbs), won by RSC (Referee Stopped Contest) 20 seconds into the second round over Isaac Parker, of Waterville. Parker started strong, aggressively shooting out of the corner, but he was quickly controlled by Riga who out boxed Parker, taking over with better counter punching skills sending Parker to the canvas at the end of the first. In the second, Riga quickly landed a combination that sent Parker to the canvas for a second time which prompted the referee to stop the fight only 20 seconds into the round.

PBC’s Kate Zehr, of South Portland, a novice class featherweight (125 lbs), kept her winning streak alive, winning a close but unanimous decision over Noelle Boran, of Boston. Zehr was awarded the “Fighter of the Night” award.

PBC’s Liz Leddy, of Portland, an open class lightweight (132 lbs), won by unanimous decision over Jessica Lampron, of Boston. In a non-stop action bout, Leddy pushed the fight going forward the entire bout. Leddy is the reigning New England Golden Gloves and former three-time National Golden Gloves champion.

In the six-round co-main event of the evening, PBC’s Casey Kramlich, of Raymond, a professional super welterweight (154 lbs), won by unanimous decision over the veteran Dennis Sharpe, Jr., of Bayonee, NJ. Despite injuring his right hand, Kramlich was in complete control of the six round bout winning the unanimous decision.

PBC Boxers Scored Six Wins out of Seven Bouts During a Busy Weekend

Portland, ME – April 23, 2018


Portland Boxing Club’s amateur boxers won seven bouts between two shows. Anthony Riga, of South Portland; Mario Wilborn, of Portland; and Chi Wong of Westbrook competed Friday at the Exchange Club of Lawrence’s 28th Annual Scholarship Fight Night at the Doubletree Hotel in Andover, MA.


Riga, a youth division light welterweight (141 lbs), won by 5-0 unanimous decision over Harrison McGrath, of Nashua, NH. Wilborn, a novice class heavyweight (201 lbs), won by 5-0 unanimous decision over Jordan Faulkner, of Haverhill, MA. Wong, an open class welterweight (152 lbs), lost by 3-2 split decision to Edwin Rozon, of Haverhill, MA. Wong started fast scoring multiple heavy blows prompting the referee to administer Rozon a standing eight count. The next two rounds were hard-fought, with Rozon making the fight close with his determined, aggressive style. Rozon pulled off a razor-close split decision win for Rozon. The bout between Wong and Rozon was awarded the bout of the night.


Portland Boxing Club’s Anthony Riga; Nathan Nappi, of Portland; Kate Zehr, of South Portland; and Josniel Castro, of Westbrook competed Saturday at Knock Out Cancer Boxing Night at the Windsor Recreation Center in Windsor, VT.


Riga won by 3-0 unanimous decision over Axel Cujantes, of Stamford, CT. Nappi, a novice class light welterweight (141 lbs), defeated Patrick McGonagle, of New Bedford, MA, by referee stopped contest (RSC) at 1:48 into the second round. Zehr, a novice class featherweight (123 lbs), won by 2-1 split decision over Alyssa Dias, of Randolph, MA. Zehr pressed the entire fight against the sharp, more experienced Dias. The bout between Zehr and Dias was awarded the bout of the night.


In the exciting main event of the evening, Castro, a USA Boxing nationally rated open class welterweight (152 lbs), won a 3-0 unanimous decision over Charlie Espinal of Lynn, MA in a hard-fought fight with tempers flaring. The fight really heated up in the second round with an exchange of standing eight counts in an all-out battle. Castro also won the third round, clearly winning the unanimous decision.


Also at this event, Portland Boxing Club’s head coach Bobby Russo was awarded the 2018 Knock Out Cancer Millie O’Brien Boxing Integrity Award. Portland Boxing Club’s amateur boxers along with professional super welterweight Casey Kramlich will be competing this Saturday at the Pro-Am “Boxing is Back” show at the Skowhegan Community Center in Skowhegan, ME.

Two Portland Boxing Club Boxers Win New England Golden Gloves Championships

Lowell, MA – February 22, 2018


PBC’s Kate Zehr, of South Portland, won a unanimous decision over Catie Ramsey, of Stamford, CT, who was representing Western New England, to win the New England Golden Gloves Novice Featherweight Championship title. Zehr’s aggressive style and effective body attack won all three rounds on all the judge’s score cards.


PBC’s Liz Leddy, of Portland, the reigning open class lightweight (132 lbs) National Golden Gloves Champion, faced Willow Crawford, of Manchester, NH, in the finals who was representing Central New England. Leddy dominated Crawford with non-stop pressure throughout the bout, winning a unanimous decision and her seventh New England Golden Gloves Championship title.


PBC’s Lindsay (Kyajohnian) Francois, of Gorham, of lost a hard-fought, unanimous decision to Ashleigh Moore, of Buzzards Bay, MA, who was representing Central New England the open class light welterweight (141 lbs) division.


PBC’s Josniel Castro, of Portland, who was the defending open class welterweight (152 lbs) New England Golden Gloves Champion and ranked fifth nationally by USA Boxing, won a unanimous decision in the semi-final round over Luca Botis, of West Point, NY, who was representing Western New England in a hotly contested bout. In the much-anticipated championship final, Castro faced off against James Perella, of Mansfield, MA, who was representing Southern New England. Castro pressed the fight all three rounds and seemed to have the edge, but the judges disagreed awarding Perella a controversial unanimous decision, much to the disappointment of the packed house who loudly voiced their disapproval.


PBC’s Danny Pang, of Portland, lost to reigning New England Champion, Felix Parilla, of North Haven, CT, who was representing Western New England in the open class (123 lbs) featherweight division. Parilla started fast, swarming Pang with a relentless attack putting Pang on defense denying Pang the opportunity to punch back. Pang seemed to be blocking most of the blows, but referee for the sake of safety stepped in and stopped the contest with 29 seconds remaining in the first round. 


The Portland Boxing Club athletes were representing the Northern New England region in the All-New England Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Lowell, MA. With four open-class boxers in the eleven final bouts, Portland Boxing Club had more boxers in the finals than any other team in New England and won the Bill Hoar Memorial Trophy for the best open-class team. With these wins, Portland Boxing Club athletes have now earned 206 championship wins in the organization’s 26 years. As an open-class boxer, Leddy will advance to the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Omaha, NE in May as a member of the New England Golden Gloves team.

Portland Boxing Club Boxers Advance to All-New England Tournament of Champions
ESSEX JCT, VT – February 3, 2018

Three Portland Boxing Club athletes competed Saturday in the Northern New England Golden Gloves Championships finals in Essex Junction, VT.

PBC’s Josniel Castro, from Portland, won a unanimous decision over Nieko Clowe, from Claremont, NH in the open class welterweight (132 lbs) division. Castro was the more experienced boxer winning all three rounds to earn the Northern New England Golden Gloves welterweight championship. PBC’s Nathan Nappi, from Portland, won a unanimous decision over Christian Vosburgh, from Keene, NH, in the novice class light welterweight (141 lbs) division. Nappi stayed busy throughout dominating Vosburgh with constant pressure to win the Northern New England Golden Gloves novice light welterweight championship. PBC’s Mario Wilborn, from Portland, lost a close but unanimous decision to Emiliano Void, from Burlington, VT in the novice class heavyweight (201 lbs) division. Wilborn got off the floor in the second round to win the third round and make it a competitive fight.

Castro was named the outstanding open class boxer for the tournament and Nappi was named the outstanding novice class boxer for the tournament. With these championship wins, Portland Boxing Club athletes have now earned 205 championship wins in the organization’s 26 years.

These winners of the Northern New England championships advance to the All-New England Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, MA. Novice class champions compete in the New England novice class Tournament of Champions semi-finals on Thursday, February 8 with the winners advancing to the finals on Thursday, February 15. Open class champions will compete in the New England open class Tournament of Champions semi-finals on Wednesday February 21 with the winners advancing to the finals on Thursday February 22. The open class New England champions will advance to the National Golden Gloves Championships in Omaha, NE in May.
Combat Sports Nutrition Clinic
The Portland Boxing Club is providing a Combat Sports Nutrition Clinic because "You Can't Out Train a Bad Diet." This clinic will be based on guidance from the US Olympic Committee to help athletes make the most of the hard work put into training by developing a nutrition plan to take their athletic performance to the next level. The clinic is presented by Mike Foley, author of Eat to Be Fit: The Truth About Fat Loss.

This nutrition clinic will help amateur athletes of all ages and skill levels use good nutrition to fuel performance and meet your goals.

Athletes will learn methods for:
  • Improving nutrition for exercise and boxing performance
  • Cutting weight for competitions
  • Managing weight gain and loss
  • Maintaining proper hydration
  • Increasing stamina, endurance and strength

In addition, athletes will learn:
  • Meal planning and portion control
  • Meal and snack timing
  • What foods to eat before, during and after exercise and bouts
  • What fluids to drink before, during and after exercise and bouts

The clinic will be held at Portland Boxing Club at 33 Allen Ave in Portland on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 12:00 pm and is free to amateur athletes in combat sports (boxing, wrestling, MMA, BJJ) from any gym thanks to a grant generously awarded from the Agnes M. Lindsay Trust. Advance registration is required.
